Meijer Contributes to Local Areas of Education

Tuesday, June 21, 2016

The Meijer Superstore of Flossmoor, IL recognized Park Forest-Chicago Heights School District 163 and Flossmoor School District 161 by donating $25,000 to each district to be used for student growth in literacy and education. Dr. Craig Doster, Superintendent of School District 161, received the check on behalf of his district. Doster stated that he plans on utilizing the funds to support their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Program.

Dr. Joyce Carmine, Superintendent of the Park Forest-Chicago Heights School District 163, School Board President Jacqueline Jordan, and Board Member Margaret McDannel, received the check on behalf of School District 163. Dr. Carmine plans to allocate the funds on literature for the young readers of the primary buildings in the district.  Students are encouraged to read 120 minutes at home and turn in weekly reading logs to promote growth in literacy.
Dr. Carmine stated, "A check for $25,000 is generous, but your contribution to children of poverty is priceless, we too have STEM and STEAM Programs that are growing, however, it is most important that we put books in the hands of students who may not have them at home.”

Other public members in attendance for the ribbon cutting ceremony were: Meijer family representative Mark Meijer, Mayor of Flossmoor Paul Braun, State Representatives Al Riley and Anthony DeLuca, the Flossmoor Village Board, as well as several local community members, Meijer staff members and staff of the Meijer construction project.
